Tell me every time you go to the Science Center you don't stop at the store for rock candy? Okay, if you don't do at least get some freeze dried treats? I love the strawberries and the Neapolitan ice cream. Yum! I wonder if we can make that too?? May have to do some research, but for now, I am going to teach you how to create your own rock candy!
First, you're going to need to collect some mason jars or jars similar. Then you will gather sugar, wood skewers and Kool-Aid packets of your choice (these will be your flavor, so feel free to match your palette!) Soak the skewers in a glass of water. (for at least an hour) Please note, this is a process and the rock candy will need time to form. I do not recommend to anyone who wants to eat rock candy that day.
Grab a pot of water and place on stove until boiling. While waiting for the water to boil, remove the wood skewers from the glass of water and roll in sugar. Once the water is boiling begin to add sugar 1 cup at a time. Continue to stir and add the remaining sugar. Roughly 10 cups until the sugar will no longer dissolve. Boil for about 10 minutes and remove to let cool for 15 minutes.
While it is cooling get your mason jars ready by adding a packet of Kool-Aid to each one. Once you are done pour the sugar water into each jar. WAIT FOR THE JARS TO BE ROOM TEMPATURE and then add the wood skewers. If you do not wait for it to cool the experiment will not work unfortunately.
The longer you wait the "bigger" your rock candy will be. Have fun and be patient! They are worth it especially if you use fun flavors!
